Carnaval in Parintins (Amazon)
Parintins, its a traditional city in country side Manaus, Amazon. With a population of only 50 thousand people, Parintins transform itself in June, during its Carnaval period.
This is the time when the city becomes divided between Red and Blue from the Boi Bumba (Blue) and Guarantido (red). Parintins becomes the stage of the biggest cultural manifestation in the north of Brazil: "The Folcloric Festival of Parintins". It is the second-largest annual festival in Brazil; only the Carnival festivities in Rio de Janeiro draw more participants.
Parintis is located on the right margin of the Amazon river, in a area of 5978 square meters, and you can reach either by boat (15 hours) or by plane from Manaus (1hour and 30 minutes). Often called Festival do Boi-Bumbá Bumba Meu Boi or simply Festival, the event takes place during three days in late June. The festival celebrates a local legend about a resurrected ox, Garantido and Caprichoso, compete in extended retellings of the story, each team attempting to out-do the other with flamboyant dances, singing, and parade floats. Each team has to its show within three hours. The team that does not follow this time limit is subjected to points penalizations. Each nightly performance is largely based on local Amazonian folklore and indigenous culture, but also incorporates contemporary Brazilian rhythms and themes. The place where the teams present themselves is called "Bumbódromo", a round, grounded stage. The "Bumbódromo" supports 35.000 people in the audience.
